Ed worked as a carpenter. He was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Odd Fellow's fraternity. He was employed as a roofer in the construction trade and occasionally worked together with Uncle Bert Lewis and sometimes he traveled to jobs. Mae often stayed behind to care for her ailing mother.

Ed was fatally injured in a construction accident when he was working on a project in Baberton, Ohio on Saturday, 24 Apr 1922. He had warned others about a potential danger at the construction site and it was the very place where his accident occurred about 10:00 in the morning. He died in the hospital in Barberton at 1:50 in the afternoon. His funeral was held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Sarversville, at 2:30 on Tuesday afternoon 27 Apr with Rev. R. H. Calderwood and Rev. Williams.

Several years earlier Ed became involved with a Julia Smith who worked in Pittsburgh and she became pregnant. Before Ed could take care of this situation appropriately, he was killed on the worksite. Mae knew of the child, but since an adoptive couple and Julia shared the same doctor, the doctor orchestrated the adoption. Julia, who later married, had the child and gave him over for adoption. he grew up as Edward Blair Stewart.
