Ray served as a Private in Company "M" 1014 Infantry 26th Division in the US Army during Worl War I. The day after the armistice was signed, Ray died of lobar pneumonia in Torcey, France. He was in training at Camp Sherman before going to France in April. He was within 300 yards of the firing line when the armistice was signed. Before entering the service, Ray was a carpenter.
