Jeremiah Sutton was a native of New Jersey and a soldier in the patriot army of the Revolution. In 1800 he migrated to Pa and settled in Westmoreland county, whence one year later, he moved to Butler Co., and there passed the remainder of his life. The Sutton family is of English origin, and early in the seventeenth century, was founded in Mass., whence it diverged to other states, where its members have filled offices of trust and responsibility.

In 1800, Jeremiah SUTTON, of New Jersey, came to this county, and a year later his son, Platt, arrived. Two more sons, Joseph and Jeremiah, also settled here. Jeremiah died in Grant County, Ind. Joseph lived and died in Concord Township. Platt SUTTON was married, and came here with his wife in 1801. He died in 1852, aged seventy-seven. He reared nine children--Mary (SUTTON) deceased; Nancy (HARPER) deceased; Elizabeth (BULLMAN), Farmington, Butler County; Jeremiah, deceased; Joseph and Phebe, Concord Township; Margaret (JAMISON), [p. 384] Armstrong County; Platt, Jamestown, Mercer County; and James, Evansburg, Butler County.
History of Butler Co. 1895
JEREMIAH SUTTON, a native of New Jersey, settled in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, about the close of the Revolutionary war, having served through that struggle as a member of a New Jersey regiment. About 1800 he came to Butler county, settled in Concord township, and purchased 100 acres of land, which he cleared and improved, and spent the balance of his life thereon. He married in New Jersey, and had one daughter, Polly, who became the wife of a man named Voorhes; and had three sons, Platt, Joseph, and Jeremiah.

Jeremiah was a private in Somerset Co. militia 1. He was a member of Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church. Jeremiah moved to Butler Co. about 1800.

There is a debate on whether this Jeremiah is the one who ended up in Butler Co., Pennsylvania. The Warren Township Historical Society article referenced below sheds some light on the line of research that postulates that Jeremiah was the son of Zebulon Sutton, whereas the following excerpt from Sara Cotelesse argues that the Butler Co. Jeremiah was a son of John Sutton and Mary Martin:
"Jeremiah SUTTON of Butler Co., PA, once thought to have been a son of Zebulon SUTTON, is a son of John SUTTON, a descendant of Pilgrim Edward FULLER." (1991 booklet by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants)
I hope to be able to access this research someday, and determine for myself whether this connection is accurate or not. For now I am leaving the family line with Zebulon, since most other genealogists I have consulted have seen fit to keep it there for the time being.
