Ray was a soldier during WWI. He was injured three times. At the outbreak of WWII he tried, unsuccessfully, to reenlist into the army on several occasions. In the 1920 census Ray's occupation was listed as a farmer. In the 1930 census, Ray and his family had moved to Fort Worth Texas from Oklahoma, and his occupation was listed as an engineer.
